Bridge construction has formed the core of Wyman & Simpson’s business since we were founded in 1924. Over the years we have built more than 100 bridges of steel, stone, concrete and composite beam design. Among of our earliest bridges were the iconic arched stone bridges that are the showpieces of Acadia National Park’s carriage paths, built for the Rockefeller family in the 1930s. In 2011, we completed construction on the nation’s first multi-span hybrid composite beam bridge, a 540-foot long by 32-foot wide Knickerbocker Bridge that spans the Back River, a tidal area in Boothbay Harbor, Maine. We have also completed two “bridges in a backpack” – the innovative composite beam bridge system recently developed by the University of Maine’s AEWC Advanced Structures and Composites Center. We are equally experienced with new construction, rehabilitation, reconstruction and value engineering projects with both in-water and on-land foundations and have built structures in the most challenging environments including environmentally sensitive sites, tidal areas and rugged terrain.

Heavy and highway construction is another core capability of our firm. Over the years, Wyman & Simpson has completed several landmark infrastructure projects including: construction of the S.D. Warren railway at Cumberland Mills (1928) and the Augusta-Manchester Highway (1937) – one of the region’s first “modern” highways. As with our bridge construction division, we work well in challenging environments – whether it is a site with unique geographic or environmental characteristics, rigid project schedules or tight budget constraints. We do so striving to keep projects on schedule and within budget.

Wyman & Simpson has considerable experience in marine construction working in areas with major tidal currents and under extreme weather conditions. Recent marine projects include reconstruction of an 1880s municipal wharf for the town of Greenville, Maine; the new causeway in Naples (currently under construction); reconstruction of the municipal float system in Bath; and replacement of the Kenduskeag Stream crib wall in Bangor. The Greenville Municipal Wharf project was selected as a Build Maine Award winner in 2010 by AGC Maine.

As a leading heavy construction firm in the northeast since 1924, Wyman & Simpson has completed numerous public utility projects and coordinated the installation of underground utility lines – electrical, natural gas, water and sewer – on a number of private construction projects. As with all of our work, safety is a priority on the job, and our crews have an excellent safety record.

One of the first major hydro-electric construction projects completed by Wyman & Simpson was the Dead River Dam, built for Central Maine Power in 1949. Since that time, we have constructed numerous hydroelectric facilities and substations in both wet and dry conditions.

Increasingly in major construction projects, time and budget constraints call for accelerated project delivery through design-build and/or value engineering. Wyman & Simpson has considerable experience in both disciplines, providing integrated design, engineering and construction services to complete projects on time and within budget.

As our region’s transportation and utility infrastructure continues to age, there has been a call not only for rehabilitation and reconstruction, but also for preservation of structures with significant historic and architectural value. Wyman & Simpson has completed several preservation projects in recent years, working to find cost-effective solutions to protect these pieces of history for future generations.
